As the town’s first major district park, it opened to the public in June 1988 and ever since has been a popular destination for locals and visitors alike. Freestone District Park has a long history that goes all the way back to its opening in 1988. Even though it was only 65 acres at the time, it quickly became a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. The original amenities included two basketball courts, two baseball fields, three picnic ramadas, restrooms, one playground area with swingsets, horseshoe pits, and a fishing lake.
In the years that followed, Freestone continued to grow and evolve. Additional amenities were added such as soccer fields and tennis courts while existing amenities were remodeled or updated. In 2000, the lake was upgraded with an artificial turf beach volleyball court and a waterslide. In 2007, additional playground equipment was added along with a splash pad. In 2013, more renovations took place when they added an amphitheater at the lake so local concerts could be held there during summer months.
